God saw how good the light was. God separated the light from the darkness. — Genesis 1:4
I’m always amazed at how powerful the first creation story is. Here are the highlights as I see them:
*God creates against the backdrop of darkness and chaos.
*God was contemplating whether or not to start creating (literally the Spirit “was hovering tremulously” over the waters).
*The defining moment was when God called forth “light,” witnessed it, and “saw how good light was.”
*Light sets the stage for everything that follows in the creative process; without it, life as we know it is impossible.
January 6 is the traditional day of “Epiphany,” celebrating Jesus as the Light of the world. Maybe it’s appropriate to reflect on why God would love light.
*Light brings warmth and sustains plant and animal life.
*Light enables us to see the beauty of all aspects of creation.
*Light enables us to do the tasks the Creater calls to do.
*Light enables us to affirm that everything God made “was supremely good.” (Genesis 1:31).
*Light reveals the path before us and points the way.
*The light of day enables us to appreciate the darkness of night, where we gather together and rest.
Sort of expands our understanding of Jesus as the Light of the world, doesn’t it? As John observed, Jesus “came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him everyone would believe in the light.” (John 1:7).
Well said.
